Cloning: Playing God

What is cloning? It is most certainly a word everyone should know about. As

especially since a smash hit movie hit the screen “ The 6th Day”. It had a few

impossible things in it that scientists are obviously Inca plebe of accomplishing

Now like being able to clone a grown human being with the same memories before

he or she died. If that could happen, the world will not be a place of love and

freedom. It will definitely be one of more control and hate, with a lot of love gone.

The process sounds simple, but it is more complicated than it seems. It starts with an

egg. The nucleus is then taken out and replaced with a cell from what ever the

scientists want to clone. No sperm is involved. It is then jolted be electricity so it can

divide into the six-cell stage, as if sperm was involved. Finally, the embryo is then

placed in surrogate mother. ( Travis, John p 250)

Now there is always a bad side to things. Jonathan Hill of Cornell University says

“one-third of cloned embryos that are implanted don’t survive even the first month”.

Some of the problems that prevent the clone from making it to birth are large-

offspring syndrome, which is when internal organs ad limbs are abnormally bigger

than the rest of the fetus, and then there is underdevelopment. With all the dead ends

to cloning, scientists and biologists goal is to perfect cloning for one big reason

Human Cloning. ( Travis, John p250)

Human cloning is a big issue due to the dangers in cloning a human being. A meeting

on why human cloning should be band was conduced by Charalyne Hunter-Gault,

Thomas Murray, and President Clinton. Gault asked some very import6ant questions

on cloning, and Murray had a very good answer for all of them. The president pointed

out that human cloning would not be tolerated nor federally funded. For the simple

fact that it is very dangerous and risky to do so because the clone will basically be

tortured before it is born and possibly after due to abnormalities. Thomas Murray is a

member of the National bioethics Advisory Commission and chair of genetics

subcommittee. He explains that human cloning may be start off good but when they

try to use a sell, it will have all the genes but some the genes will be adornment.

When they try to use the same gene the cell may have some that are sleep that may

wake up and cause abnormalities, or ones that need to wake up and does not

therefore causing the child to be at risk. Hunter said there were some ethical reasons

as well. Murray replied that they have asked people what they think about the cloning.

The people replied by saying that the baby will not be one of individuality but a

creation and an invention. The conversation was very detailed and had a lot of

information. The problems that can occur in cloning a human is why the legislation

banned human cloning. It is only for five years, which gives them time to be able to

look at it as the years go by if there is any improvement on the whole thing to consider

funding. Until then there are people trying to make a way to make illegal to try even if

they have the money to do so.

Of course for every action there is a reaction. It is fully understood that people who

are for cloning are the ones who want to participate in the whole idea. The one

against it are mainly church going people. Scientists feel they will one day make a

difference. If they can successfully clone a human the possibilities are endless.

Recreating a loved one, giving someone the opportunity to make a child exactly like

them, and possibly clone important dead people. Church going individuals see they

are changing the meaning of life. Biologist and scientists are taking away from what

God created us for. There are a few ethical reasons why the cloning of humans

should not go on. For one thing, not only is the unborn child at risk but also the

surrogate mothers area at risk of multiple miscarriages, for example the cloning of a

sheep named Dolly finally succeeded after 277 attempts. The scientists would not

positively know if the baby will be aright until it is born, which means the baby will have

to suffer and possibly die. If it does make it to birth it will have to be tested

repeatedly. That is why it is said it will not be child of individuality but an invention a

creation. (Pence, George 40 –45)

National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) points out how it is unethical and

dangerous to clone a human. The group was instructed by President Clinton to

investigate cloning and hold hearings with different groups so they can speak their

opinion on cloning. Just like with the church going people, the people they investigate

feel it is unethical. It is not something that should happen to humans they do not have

problems with the scientists using animals but humans is an unspeakable act. (

Pence, George)

A group formed by gays and lesbians called Cloning Rights United Front are all for

cloning. The founder of ( CRUF), Randolf Wicker feels the government should not

stop people from reproducing their selves. It should be a persons right to do so

because it is out choice and out body. They feel since there is other artificial ways

that may be risky for a child like, in vitro fertilization where the process is similar to

cloning. The egg is taken and physically injected with the sperm. Then put into the

mother of surrogate mother. As it may, they should have the right to clone

themselves. Gays and lesbians already are an outcast of society and people do not

feel it will be a good idea to clone gays because the child will grow up gay. CRUF

does not feel the child will grow up gay or lesbian just because the original is gay. It

should be the peoples right.

There has been on nationally know successful clone named Dolly. It took 277 times

before she was reality. She was born on July 5, 1996 at 5:00 o’clock pm in Rosiln,

Scotland. The creator’s name is Ian Wilmut who worked at the Roslin Institute in

Scotland. It was a ling and tedious process, which opened a new door that started a

new trend to try and clone a human.

With all the proof and evidence of the problems that could happen when trying to

clone a human it is definitely a problem waiting to happen. Not only because of the

risk but also it is not something God will approve of. It is wrong

for a child to be labeled, as an experiment when it grows up and finds out he/she was

an invention.
